The Ballito UIP is proud to continue investing in initiatives that uplift and support the local community, such as our recent rollout of brand-new Moja Cart umbrellas.
First introduced at the end of 2020, the Moja Carts form part of the UIPβs social responsibility efforts in collaboration with the KwaDukuza Municipality. The initiative was created to provide informal traders with a safe, secure and more structured space to operate within the precinct. βMojaβ, a South African slang term meaning something of value, speaks directly to the purpose of the project: creating meaningful opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
Today, there are five Moja Carts located at key, high-footfall points across Ballito:
- Outside Tiger Wheel & Tyre on Douglas Crowe Drive
- Corner of Phezulu Road and Douglas Crowe Drive
- Outside the Ballito Junction pedestrian gate on the P445
- Outside Nandoβs near the P445
- Outside Shell along the P445
Postive response from traders
As part of ongoing upgrades within the precinct, the Ballito UIP has recently sponsored brand-new umbrellas for each of these carts. Beyond improving the overall look and feel of the trading spaces, the umbrellas provide much-needed shelter from the elements, making day-to-day trading more comfortable and sustainable.
In addition, there has been a broader rollout of new umbrellas across the precinct – including allocations for other local traders and upgraded umbrellas in the public seating area near Clarke Bay.
The response from traders has been very positive, with many expressing their appreciation and excitement about the upgrade. By supporting local traders, the Ballito UIP and KDM are not only enhancing the precinct but also contributing to a more inclusive and vibrant local economy.
