The first Moja cart with its eye-catching, welcoming design was introduced to the Ballito Business Park in November last year. Since its inception, the project which aims to uplift informal traders by giving them a safe place to sell and secure their goods, has grown.
‘Moja’ is South African slang for something of value and the carts have more than lived up to their name by adding value to the precinct and enhancing the lives of the traders using them and the families they support!
“I am very happy with my cart, I have a stable safe place to sell my goods to the public,” Sanelisiwe Gumede Moja Cart operator.
There are now six Moja Carts in operation, all catering to the Ballito Business Park. The operators sell anything from fruit and cakes to sweets and cold drinks and everything in between.
“We as the Ballito UIP are proud that the carts have ignited hope by providing a safe space for the operators to earn a living,” says Thierry Leclezio, Ballito UIP Precinct Manager. “And once time and funding allow, we will explore options for introducing the initiative onto the Ballito promenade.”
