How surveillance helps to keep our public spaces safe

Surveillance systems are crucial to enhancing safety in the public realm. Not only do they act as a crime deterrent, recordings are pivotal in aiding prosecutors and law enforcement identify and arrest criminals.

Ballito UIP Security Manager Dieter Fittkau says, “Before the introduction of CCTV and other types of surveillance systems, law enforcement would rely solely on eyewitness accounts which weren’t always reliable.”

Part of the Ballito UIP’s mandate is to improve the safety of its designated area in a bid to enhance the quality of life for those who live, work and play in the area and maintain investor confidence. The UIP’s proactive security approach includes partnering with the SAPS, KDM Protection Services and local community safety forums. Surveillance comes in the form of a series of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras located throughout the precinct.

ANPR cameras use optical character recognition technology to read vehicle registration plates and create vehicle location data. “These cameras are instrumental in identifying and locating suspicious vehicles and since March we’ve had at least 10 successes where arrests were made or a vehicle was impounded. We’ve also had other activations where a listed suspicious vehicle was located and followed with the drivers soon leaving the area,” states Fittkau.

He added that the UIP have a good working relationship with the Ballito Neighbourhood Watch who have several Sniper cameras in place between Salt Rock and Ballito and share operational information.

The Ballito beachfront also has CCTV cameras which were installed by Cyberview Letting enabling members of the public to login and view certain parts of the beachfront at any time. Click here to view in real time https://cyberview.co.za/index.php/live-cam.

“These cameras together with our ANPR system form an integral part of our security system. Crime prevention and detection is key to keeping the area safe and attending to non-criminal incidents so that shoppers, businesses, property owners and the general public can continue to enjoy the fantastic lifestyle and investment opportunities synonymous with the Ballito area,” concludes Fittkau.
