As the Ballito UIP enters its 4th year of operation, we take a look at the special projects completed over and above the daily cleaning, maintenance, greening and security work done in the precinct.
Introducing urban management services to public space in Ballito in November 2015, the Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) continues to focus on delivering an exceptional experience of place to the users and stakeholders within its jurisdiction.
Used in different forms the world over to address urban challenges that impact on both the public and private realm, the Ballito UIP is funded by the local commercial property owners and provides complementary and supplementary services to those provided by KDM. The annual scope of services is decided on by the UIP board and driven by the UIP management team against a business plan that runs parallel to the KDM integrated service plan.
Special Project Focus
Day to day operational services in the Ballito UIP range from security and cleaning to general maintenance and landscaping, with an additional focus on what we call Special Projects. These are key improvement projects that require separate budgets, planning and in some cases involvement by the Kwadukuza Municipality (KDM). Examples of the special projects carried out in Ballito since the inception of the UIP are listed below with related BEFORE AND AFTER images:
Safe and Secure
Security services on the Ballito boardwalk rolled out in November 2015, with an additional security complement introduced in the Business Park in October 2017.
Currently, the UIP provides 24/7 security services in the form of 2 vehicles and guards on foot, to the beach area, upper Ballito and the Business Park, which has had an extremely positive impact on creating a safe and secure Ballito. Additional security services are deployed over peak seasons like the Festive Season and during the Ballito Pro, ensuring the UIP can manage the influx of visitors to the area at these times.
The primary focus of the Ballito UIP remains cleaning, greening and safety and we are continually working to make the area more appealing while ensuring that safety is a priority and issues like bylaw infringements are dealt with as efficiently as possible.
In addition to this focus, the UIP plans for 2019 will be on landscaping projects with an emphasis on a co-ordinated theme for the area and high visibility gardens at key points. These and other projects will be captured under the news section of the Ballito UIP website.
